Great Atlantic Pumpkin Weigh-off 2015

Satu_MG_7077rday October 3, 2015, Windsor Nova Scotia: Dill Farm in the town of Windsor Nova Scotia in Canada was fittingly home to the 31st annual Giant Atlantic Pumpkin Weigh-off this year.  Dill Farm is the family home  of Danny Dill who has furthered the tradition started by his father Howard Dill for growing Atlantic Giant Pumpkins in Nova Scotia.

The pumpkin industry has come a long way over the past 31 years with giant pumpkins that use to win the contests at 950 pounds, today’s victors are tipping the scales at in excess of 2,000 pounds.  To view photos and continue reading.

While the weather on this date was bit inclement it did not deter the growers from bringing in their pumpkins to compete nor the fans and spectators from coming to watch. The Windsor West Hants Pumpkin Festival Occurs over a period of two weekends.  It begins with the weigh-off this weekend and concludes the following weekend. It will feature the annual Children’s Wish Pumpkin Parade and Pumpkin Regatta which involves hardy souls willing to test their stamina in paddling a hollowed out giant pumpkin across Lake Pisiquid from the shores of Falmouth to the Town of Windsor.

Today’s weigh-off began around 9Am with vendors and craft people on site along with a local music provided courtesy of the Windsor Business Enhancement Society (Windsor’s downtown merchant). At 10 AM heavy lifting got underway beginning with the watermelons, gourds, squash and field pumpkins.  In parallel the pumpkin painting and carving contest were taking place along with the sweetly difficult task of the pumpkin desert making contest. All in all a great day for the pumpkins, the participants and the crowd.
